Alwin Schuler, Chileanjourney, Santiago, Chile One of the very best personal guides we have come across! Knowledgeable, informative and flexible. Alwin was able to answer in full, and extensively, every question we asked and did so using excellent English. He gives freely of his time and is helpful beyond all expectations. When our luggage failed to arrive on our flight he made numerous telephone calls on our behalf over the next two days to help trace it. When we asked to bring our transfer to Valparaiso forward by an hour it wasn't a problem but he did explain that the winery we had planned to visit would not be open at that time. Instead, he took us to an up-market wine merchant's in Santiago and bought us a bottle of wine from the winery as 'compensation' for missing the tour!
Pedro Werberg, Buenos Aires, Argentina Pedro (Amigo de Buenos Aires) is an excellent guide. He is extremely interesting, flexible and knowledgeable with wonderful English. He uses the most appropriate mode of transport (foot, taxi, bus, train) to move around the city to ensure that visitors see and learn as much as possible in the time available. A chance remark will often produce a quick detour or change in itinerary that adds to the tour rather than replacing another element. Thoroughly recommended!
Real English Tours, Montevideo, Uruguay Liz Cowley offers an interesting tour of Montevideo with a lot of personalised twists. She is well prepared with images of the city as it was in the past to help to explain today's Montevideo and with a lot of relevant background information. Her commentary and answers to questions reflect her extensive knowledge of the city and country and help to make her tour excellent value. Thoroughly recommended!
Hotel Orly, Santiago, Chile A lovely boutique hotel, the Orly is in an excellent location near to shops and restaurants. The staff are efficient and helpful and the rooms well presented, though not too generously sized. Breakfast is more than adequate and the restaurant offers a good selection of light meals. Recommended.
Howard Johnson Hotel Boutique Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina A smart and modern boutique hotel, the Howard Johnson Hotel Boutique Recoleta is in an excellent location just 10 minutes walk from tourist locations such as the Recoleta Cemetery. The staff are pleasant and keen to help, and the rooms clean and of a good size. The continental breakfast is quite extensive and augmented with scrambled eggs on request. Recommended (though be aware that the quoted rates do not always include taxes).
